This is one full cord of seasoned firewood: split logs dried to below 20% moisture, ready to go straight into a wood stove, open fire or fire pit. No waiting a year for it to dry and no hissing logs. Order it, stack it, burn it.

A cord is a lot of wood. For many homes it’s a good share of a winter’s burning, so it pays to know what you’re getting and where you’ll keep it. Here’s the detail.

Log length matters for your firebox. Tell us the depth of your stove or fireplace when ordering and ask what lengths we have, so the logs fit without extra cutting.

What “a cord” actually means

Firewood gets sold in all sorts of loose units: loads, ricks, bags, crates. A cord is the one with a fixed definition: 128 cubic feet of wood, neatly stacked. Picture a stack eight feet long, four feet high and four feet deep.

Watch out for the “face cord”. That’s a single row the same height and length, but only as deep as one log, often around a third of a full cord. When you compare prices for seasoned firewood, make sure you’re comparing the same amount.

Why seasoned firewood burns better

Freshly cut wood can be half water by weight. Put it on a fire and much of the energy goes into boiling that water off rather than heating your room. You get a smoky, smouldering fire, blackened stove glass and tar building up in the chimney.

Seasoned firewood has had that water dried out. At under 20% moisture it lights easily, burns with a clear flame, and gives far more heat per log. It’s also the main thing you can do to cut smoke from a wood burner. The EPA Burn Wise programme has good, plain guidance on burning wood cleanly if you want to read further.

Checking moisture yourself

A cheap moisture meter is worth having if you burn wood. To use one properly, split a log and test the freshly exposed face, not the outside. Readings below 20% mean the wood is ready.

Without a meter, look for:

  • Cracks running out from the centre of the log ends
  • Bark that’s loose or falling off
  • A hollow knock when two logs are banged together, not a dull thud
  • Logs that feel light for their size

Stacking and storing a cord

Seasoned firewood stays seasoned only if you keep it dry. Rain on the top of the stack is the main problem. Some practical points:

  • Stack it off the ground on pallets or rails
  • Cover the top but leave the sides open so air can move through
  • Keep the stack a little away from the house wall
  • Bring a few days’ worth indoors at a time so it’s warm and dry when it goes on the fire

A woodshed with open sides is ideal. A tarp over the top of an outdoor stack works, as long as it doesn’t wrap down the sides and trap moisture.

Matching firewood to your appliance

Different fires want slightly different things from seasoned firewood:

  • Closed wood stoves work best with dry, medium-sized splits that fit flat in the firebox with room for air.
  • Open fireplaces are less efficient, so dry wood matters even more to avoid smoke drifting into the room.
  • Fire pits and chimineas take smaller pieces that catch quickly outdoors.
  • Wood-fired ovens need very dry wood to reach high temperatures without soot.

Whatever you burn on, the moisture figure is what counts most. Seasoned firewood below 20% suits all of these.

Burning tips

Start with small, dry kindling and a few thin splits, then build up. Give the fire plenty of air until it’s going well before you turn the air control down. Burning too low, too early, makes even good wood smoulder. Have your chimney swept regularly, at least once a year if you burn often.

Ordering and delivery

Add the cord to your basket and check out. We’ll confirm your order, the delivery cost to your address and how the wood will be packed for transport. We deliver to customers worldwide, and freight depends on distance and access. If the delivery point is hard to reach, mention it in the order notes or contact us before you buy.

Prefer a particular species? We also sell seasoned maple firewood for long, hot fires and seasoned alder firewood, which lights fast and smells pleasant. If you’ve got space and time to dry your own, green firewood costs less.

Seasoned firewood: common questions

How long does a cord of seasoned firewood last?

It varies with your stove, how often you light it and the climate. Someone burning most evenings through a cold winter might get through two or three cords. Occasional weekend fires might make one cord last more than a season.

Can I store it indoors?

Keep only a few days’ supply inside. A whole cord indoors can bring insects in and takes up a lot of space.

Is seasoned firewood the same as kiln-dried?

Both mean dried wood. Seasoned usually means air-dried over time, kiln-dried means dried with heat. What counts is the moisture figure, and ours is under 20%.

Why is my seasoned firewood hissing?

Hissing or bubbling at the log ends means water is boiling out. If a log does this, it has taken on moisture, often from rain getting into the stack. Dry it indoors near the stove for a few days before burning.

Do you sell pellets as well?

Yes. If you’re thinking about a pellet stove, see our hardwood heating pellets. All our logs are in the dried firewood category, and the dried firewood page explains storage and burning in more depth.
