Description
Our hardwood heating pellets come on a single pallet holding about a tonne of fuel in 15 kg bags. They’re pressed from oak and beech, two dense hardwoods, and they give a long, even heat that suits pellet boilers and stoves left running for hours at a time.

If you burn pellets through a proper winter, density matters. More wood in every pellet means more heat in every hopper load. That’s the main reason people choose hardwood over softwood, and it’s what this page is about.

Why people choose hardwood heating pellets
Oak and beech are heavy timbers. When they’re ground, dried and pressed, the result is a pellet that burns slowly and holds an even temperature. In practice that means:
- Fewer hopper refills on cold days
- A steadier flame, which suits boilers running long cycles
- A good bed of embers in stoves that let you see the fire
Hardwood heating pellets take a moment longer to catch than softwood, because there’s less resin in oak and beech. Once lit, they settle into a calm burn. Many customers run them through the coldest months and switch to our softwood heating pellets for autumn and spring, when quick heat matters more than a long burn.

Moisture, ash and what the numbers mean
Dry fuel gives clean heat, wet fuel gives smoke. Our pellets are kept dry through production, packing and storage, and the ash they leave is low. You’ll empty the ash pan less often than with logs, and the heat exchanger stays cleaner for longer.
If you want a yardstick, the ENplus scheme is the one most stove and boiler makers refer to. Its top grade, A1, caps moisture at 10% and ash at 0.7%, with a minimum energy content of 4.6 kWh per kilogram. Ask us and we’ll tell you how the batch of hardwood heating pellets we’re shipping now measures against that.
On energy, a tonne of quality pellets holds roughly 4,600 to 5,000 kWh. That’s about half the energy of a thousand litres of heating oil. So two pallets come close to replacing a tank of oil, which is a useful figure when you’re working out how many to order.
Will they work in my appliance?
Most domestic stoves and boilers take 6 mm pellets, and that’s what most buyers need. A few large boilers are set up for 8 mm. Your manual will say which you need, along with any fuel grade the warranty depends on. If it isn’t clear, send us the make and model and we’ll check before you pay.
These are heating pellets. Don’t put them in a pellet grill or smoker. For food, use our hardwood BBQ pellets, which are sold for cooking.
Looking after the pallet
Keep hardwood heating pellets in the dry. A garage, a shed with a sound roof, or a covered corner of a barn all work. Leave the pallet off the bare floor, keep it away from damp walls, and leave the wrap on until you start using it. Open one bag at a time and fold the top over if you don’t finish it.

Pellets that get wet swell and break up into dust, and dust is what blocks augers. Store them well and the bottom bag in March will be as good as the top bag in October.
If you ever doubt a bag, try the water test. Drop a handful into a glass. Good pellets sink first and swell slowly. Pellets that crumble straight away have taken on moisture somewhere along the way.
How ordering works
Put the pallet in your basket and check out. We then:
- Check the order and confirm the number of pallets and the delivery cost to your address
- Pick the pallet from our dry warehouse and wrap it for the journey
- Send it by road and keep you posted until it arrives
We supply buyers worldwide. Freight depends on distance and order size, which is why we confirm it before anything moves. Let us know in the order notes if your access is narrow or steep, or if the driver needs to unload somewhere specific. Questions are welcome on the contact page.
Using a lot of fuel? A full truckload of bulk hardwood pellets is 24 tonnes in one delivery. If you want something from the oak side of the range in particular, see our oak blend pellets.
Hardwood heating pellets: common questions
How long does a tonne last?
It depends on the appliance, the size of the house and the weather. A room stove used in the evenings might take most of a season to get through a pallet. A whole-house boiler in deep winter can use a tonne in a few weeks. Last year’s usage is the best guide. Our guide to how long a pallet of pellets lasts walks through the sums.
Are hardwood heating pellets worth it over softwood?
For long burns and colder climates, many people think so. For quick heat in a room stove, softwood often suits better. Read the hardwood pellets guide for a side-by-side view, or order the mixed pellet pallet and compare them yourself.
Why do my hardwood heating pellets leave more ash than expected?
Usually it’s the appliance settings rather than the fuel. A burner set up for softwood can run short of air with denser hardwood heating pellets. Check the air and feed settings in your manual, or ask your installer to adjust them.
Do you sell smaller amounts?
This product is sold per pallet. Everything else we stock is in the hardwood pellets category and the shop. Background reading on the fuel itself is on the wood pellet page.
