Description

This is a full cord of seasoned maple firewood, split and dried below 20% moisture. Maple is a dense hardwood that burns hot and long and leaves a deep bed of coals, which is what you want on cold nights and for stoves that need to run for hours. It’s ready to burn the day it arrives.

If you heat a home mainly with wood, a dense species like maple means fewer trips to the log pile and fewer reloads before bed.

Why maple is a good firewood

Maple is one of the classic firewood species in cold regions. Its timber is heavy, so a single log carries a lot of energy. Once seasoned, it:

  • Burns for a long time compared with lighter woods
  • Gives strong, even heat
  • Leaves a bed of glowing coals that keeps the stove warm and makes relighting easy
  • Produces little smoke and few sparks when dry

That’s why seasoned maple firewood is a favourite for overnight burns. Load the stove before bed, turn the air down once the logs have caught, and there’s usually enough heat left in the coals to bring the fire back to life in the morning.

Lighting it well

Dense wood takes a little more effort to start than light wood. Build the fire with dry kindling and some thinner splits first. Once there’s a good flame, add the bigger seasoned maple firewood logs. Some people keep a lighter wood just for starting fires: our seasoned alder firewood catches fast and works well underneath maple.

Don’t turn the air down too early. A dense log needs a hot fire around it before it burns cleanly. Damp, smouldering fires are what blacken glass and coat chimneys with creosote. The EPA Burn Wise pages explain good burning practice clearly.

How long a cord lasts

Usage varies a great deal. A stove used every evening through a long, cold winter might get through two or three cords. Someone heating mainly with wood, all day, can use more. Occasional fires at weekends might make a cord last more than a year. Because maple is dense, a cord of seasoned maple firewood generally goes further than a cord of lighter wood.

If you heat with wood as your main source, the long burn and good coals of seasoned maple firewood make the biggest difference to your day: fewer reloads, steadier warmth, and a fire that’s easy to bring back in the morning.

Cooking over maple

Maple isn’t only for heating. It makes a fine cooking wood for wood-fired ovens, open grills and campfire cooking. The heat is strong and even, and the smoke is mild with a faint sweetness that suits pork, poultry and vegetables. Let the fire burn down to coals before cooking over it directly. Flames scorch food, coals cook it. Seasoned maple firewood gives a good, long-lasting coal bed for exactly this.

Storing seasoned maple firewood

Keep the stack dry, ventilated and off the ground:

  • Use pallets or rails underneath
  • Cover the top of the stack and leave the sides open
  • Stack in rows so air can move through
  • Bring in a few days’ supply at a time so it’s warm and dry on the fire

Stored like this, the wood stays below 20% moisture and burns as well at the end of winter as at the start.

Safety basics for wood burning

A few habits keep any wood fire safe. Have the chimney swept at least once a year, more if you burn a lot. Fit a carbon monoxide alarm in any room with a stove or open fire, and a smoke alarm on every floor. Use a fireguard with open fires, especially with children or pets around. Empty ash into a metal bucket with a lid and leave it outside to cool for a day before disposing of it. Hot embers can hide in ash for longer than you’d think.

Ordering and delivery

Add the cord to your basket and check out. We’ll confirm the order, the delivery cost to your address and how the wood is packed for transport. We deliver to buyers worldwide. The cost depends on distance and access, so we agree it with you before dispatch. Let us know in the order notes about any access issues, or ask first through the contact page.

Seasoned maple firewood: questions

Is maple better than oak for firewood?

Both are excellent. Oak is usually denser and slower to season. Maple is easier to split and seasons faster, while still giving long, hot fires.

Can I use it in an open fireplace?

Yes. Use a spark guard, as you would with any wood.

Does it need more seasoning when it arrives?

No. It’s already below 20% moisture. Keep it dry and it’s ready to burn.

How should I stack seasoned maple firewood indoors?

Keep only a few days’ supply inside, in a log basket or rack near the stove but not touching it. Leave a safe gap between the stack and any heat source, as your stove manual specifies.

Why does my maple take a while to catch?

It’s dense. Start with plenty of dry kindling and smaller splits, and give the fire full air until the maple is burning well.
